If your senior has recently been diagnosed with some form of heart disease, you might not be sure just what you can do to help her to remain healthy. Her doctor is likely to give you some guidelines, so be sure to follow those as closely as you can.
Leave Room for Exercise Every Day
Even a little bit of exercise can give your senior big results. Make sure that you’re leaving plenty of room in her daily schedule to get some movement in. If you can find some exercise that she likes, whether that’s walking or taking a water aerobics class at the local gym, she’ll be more inclined to continue. Make sure that her doctor clears her for exercise before you try something new.
Revamp Her Diet
Her doctor may have already mentioned that your elderly family member needs to eat a specific diet tailored to her health needs, but that’s easier said than done. Changing eating habits is hard work, especially if your senior is used to eating whatever she wants. If possible, work with a dietician to find recipes she’ll like. Many doctors can recommend a dietician that they work with to you.
Help Her Get Plenty of Sleep
If your elderly family member isn’t sleeping well, that doesn’t bode well for her overall health. Try to figure out why she’s not sleeping well and do what you can to correct the problem. If she’s too busy and various activities are cutting into sleeping time, she might want to cut back on what she’s doing.
Learn to Manage Stress Together
Stress is a normal part of life, but too much of it can create serious problems for a senior with heart trouble. As your aging adult’s caregiver, you could probably stand to manage your stress better, too. Practice deep breathing together or learn to meditate. For yourself, learn to step away sometimes. Hire elder care providers who can stay with your senior while you take some time for yourself.
Living healthier is all about making better choices. Now that your senior has been diagnosed with heart problems, she can take the time she needs to gradually make better and better choices every day.
